The Shih Tzu comes under the Utility Group of the UK Kennel Club and the Toy Group in the Australian Kennel Club classifications.  The Shih Tzu is a small, but lively, fun and intelligent dog that just loves affection and being part of a family.  Although they have a lot of long fur that grows long if not clipped, they are perfect for allergy sufferers as they shed little or any fur at all, which also makes them perfect for the home if you find housework tedious!  They also come in many different colours.

They are similar looking to the Lhasa Apso which causes some confusion, but our history section below explains how and when the confusion arose.  The Shih Tzu is the smaller of the two with a shorter nose and they have quite different characters.  The Shih Tzu is more openly responsive towards strangers, the Lhasa Apso is a bit more reserved and tends to think before it leaps – so to speak.
